Biography and statement
Inés Jimm (Seville, 1996) is a visual artist whose pictorial practice explores the act of sleeping as a state of radical truth, emotional pause, and a silent form of resistance against the mandate of productivity. Her work, developed primarily in oil and graphite on canvas, belongs to a language of emotional figuration where the material—oscillating between the resolved and the unfinished—engages with the vulnerability of the sleeping body and becomes a medium for intimacy.
From a deeply autobiographical longing, her painting investigates the possibility of a non-performative self: bodies that rest without narrative, inhabiting the threshold between wakefulness and surrender. Her work initiates a more universal reflection on identity, exhaustion, and the desire to belong. She portrays sleeping bodies not through dreamlike fantasy, but through the exact moment in which all performance ceases. Sleep appears as a space where the obligation to construct a coherent “self” dissolves. Through surrendered figures, free from heroic narratives, she proposes a new kind of portrait—one that does not seek to define, but to allow.
Her painting emerged from a personal rupture with the digital world, after inhabiting spaces of public exposure on social media. This turn toward painting became a refuge where time slows down and the private becomes visible with honesty. Through a lively brushstroke, deliberately open areas, and suspended compositions, her works propose inhabiting stillness as a legitimate gesture. Influenced by Lucian Freud, Joaquín Sorolla, and cinematic language, her practice subverts spectacle through intimacy, offering images that are not meant to impress, but to hold.
With solo and group exhibitions across Spain, Latin America, and the United States, her work has been featured in fairs such as Art Madrid, Hybrid 2025, Estampa, and FACBA, as well as institutional collaborations like Luces y Sombras at the Museo de la Cancillería in Mexico City, and a commissioned reinterpretation by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid as a guest artist. Her ongoing project, When You Sleep, continues to expand as a pictorial reflection—where art becomes a seed, and sleep an invitation for the viewer to dissolve into a shared compassion that dismantles roles, making us all the same when we sleep. Neither good nor bad—just human.
